White marks on taps, scale in the geyser, soap that won't lather — that's hard water. A water softener fixes it for every tap in your home.
As water flows through rock and soil it picks up dissolved calcium and magnesium. The more of these minerals it carries, the "harder" it is — and borewell water in many parts of India is very hard. You can't see the minerals in a glass, but they leave hard white deposits wherever water dries or is heated.
Softened water is fine for bathing, washing and cooking. For drinking we recommend a purifier (RO/UV), which also removes germs and excess TDS.
No. A softener swaps hardness minerals for sodium, so TDS stays about the same. To reduce TDS for drinking, use an RO purifier.
Bathroom softeners are manual and need no power. Automatic softeners use a small amount of electricity to run their control valve.
It depends on your water hardness and how much water you use. Automatic models alert you; most homes refill every few weeks.
